Landscape Photography isn’t fair and such is life in general. I’ve heard it so many times, “if only I could take such a great photo as yours, I’d be so happy”. To me happiness is vague-it comes with expectations of winning something or it comes with ties and can lead to entitlement. I don’t feel as an accomplished photographer- nor will I ever- because as my Brother once stated : “ Photography is like sports, you can’t be good at all of them.” So with that being said, I strive to do what brings me joy. That joy is the challenge of landscape photography : hiking in the dark, hours of endless research of areas, weather patterns, milky way movements across our night skies, returning to the same locations in search of the different and better conditions and driving hundreds of miles to reach a new location. It is tough sometimes but anything worth having always comes with a little sweat equity. Hard work really does pay off when week after week, the sky seems to just raise your hopes only to disappoint until that one sunrise or sunset presents you with pure magic . That magic rejuvenates your soul and reminds you that it will be back and potentially waiting for you as the 0’dark thirty alarm rings its bell. So get up and get outside, leave the ego and expectations at home and don’t forget to make your bed ! Afterall, if all else fails, you will come back to a ready made bed.
I enjoy all of the aspects of landscape photography as it is ever evolving and as I continue down the path of challenge I find myself more satisfied with my images. The images I produce are minimally developed. To me they need to be as genuine as possible. In today’s world of social media I feel as if true photography has lost itself in the AI world of sky replacement and add ons to photography development. The natural beauty is there, we just have to be in the right place at the right time to capture that fleeting moment of light, the in between storms and bluebird skies to obtain it.
Photography is my excuse to get out in our natural world, to feel the cold snow through my boots, the ocean spray on my face, the hot sun out on the desert and yes the grinding crunch of sand in our teeth as the wind blows across the dunes. It is my hope that I am able to translate this expression and feeling to you through my images.
It is with great gratitude that I thank you for visiting the site and I hope it gives you the inspiration to go out and enjoy our world, to take some time alone in the woods or the deserts , listen to the sounds and silence of our world and let it cleanse your spirit.
